In our pursuit to making rights real, we bring to you our plans and activities for the week. This is done, in so that the public, media and our partners are always aware of our cases and advocacy activities. This week Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is participating in a two-day discussion on the expansion of the jurisdiction of African court to trial crimes under international law. For updates on the discussions follow us on twitter: @LHR_SA

 

 8 November 2016

LHR will appear in the Constitutional Court to challenge the constitutionality of the provisions of the Immigration Act relating to detention.  Read more about this case here: http://www.lhr.org.za/news/2016/media-alert-lhr-challenge-constitutionality-immigration-detention-laws

Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme (RMRP) will be part of the Peacebuilding Training Programme on services delivery monitoring. The training is organized by Freedom House and facilitated by Afesis-Corplan. The aim of the training is to empower the participants with skills relevant to assessing the causes of service protests and engaging state in non- violent manner to negotiate for service delivery improvements.

 

10 November 2016

RMRP Statelessness Project will participate in a presentation on statelessness to the SADC parliamentary Forum in Harare together with UNHCR.

 

11 November 2016

The Iranti-organisation in coordinating a mass community engagement to discuss the Draft Hate Crimes Bill that is now open for comment until 1 December 2016. The LHR Gender and Equality Programme  has been invited to address engagement on the history and content of the Bill.

RMRP in Durban will be meeting with Department of Social Development and the Refugee Reception Offices on the issue of separated and unaccompanied minors.

 

12 November 2016

Our Women on Farm Workers Project in Upington will be part of a workshop hosted by The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). The main focus on the workshop is to discuss labour law and the link between tenure security and employment.
